SMART Chairman to co-chair 2006 Computer Supported Cooperative Work Conference

ACM to facilitate discussion of leading edge collaboration technology in Banff, Alberta

CALGARY, Alberta --- December 21, 2004 --- SMART Technologies Inc. announces that David Martin, SMART’s chairman and co-CEO, will co-chair the 2006 Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) conference held by the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM). The 2006 conference will mark the 20th anniversary of the gathering. Pamela Hinds, associate professor in the management science and engineering department at Stanford University, will also co-chair the 2006 conference. Held every two years by the ACM, the CSCW conference is a leading forum for work on the design, deployment and evaluation of collaborative technologies that affect groups, organizations, communities and societies. New technologies of this type continue to appear in all segments of society. While the field of CSCW began formally nearly two decades ago with a focus on work, CSCW researchers and developers now attend to all aspects of social life. For more information, visit the ACM website at www.acm.org.

David Martin is a recognized expert in group collaboration technology and has authored a number of articles and papers on the subject of group working and learning. He has a degree in applied mathematics and holds a number of U.S. patents. Mr. Martin is a founding member of the Calgary Council of Advanced Technologies and a member of the Society of Information Displays and is an ACM member. He recently received the 2004 Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance Award for Private Sector Innovation and Leadership in Advanced Technology in recognition of his outstanding technological innovation and corporate leadership.

“The ACM is a major force in advancing the skills of information technology professionals and students worldwide and is known as the industry's leading portal to computing literature, authoritative publications and pioneering conferences,” says David Martin. “The appointment is a great honor and I look forward to working with my co-chair to put on a conference in Banff that will continue the discussion around computer supported cooperative work.”

“This conference is the premiere gathering of world experts in social and technical aspects of collaborative systems,” says Dr. Saul Greenberg, professor in the department of computer science at the University of Calgary, specializing in human computer interaction and computer supported cooperative work. “Having this conference in Canada is timely with the current research project titled ‘Network for Effective Collaboration Technologies through Advanced Research’ that has been undertaken by six Canadian universities. We are indeed fortunate to have David Martin as co-chair, for he brings to it his broad and integrative knowledge of the academic and industrial perspectives.”
